HISTORY

Established in 1861, the Keresztény Magvető (Christian Sower) is the main magazine of the Unitarian and liberal theological literature in Transylvania.  Due to the capricious changes of the 20. Century, the quarterly magazine was published in three series.

1. sorozat: 1861–1918

A kezdeti időszakot leginkább az unitárius egyház jövőjébe és missziójába vetett bizalom és az unitárius teológiai irodalom megalapozása jellemezte. Kiemelkedő szerepű szerzők: Jakab Elek, Kanyaró Ferenc, Kőváry László, Brassai Sámuel, Kriza János, Ferencz József, Albert János, Péterfi Dénes, Simén Domokos.

The 1st series: 1861–1918

This early period was dominated by the founding of the Unitarian theological literature, as well as the obvious trust in the future and general mission of the Unitarian Church. Authors with a decisive role in this time were Jakab Elek, Kanyaró Ferenc, Kőváry László, Brassai Sámuel, Kriza János, Ferencz József, Albert János, Péterfi Dénes and Simén Domokos.

2. sorozat: 1922–1944

Az I. világháború megrázkódtatásait átélt társadalomnak és egyháznak fokozatosan és céltudatosan újra „magára kellett találnia”. A Keresztény Magvetőt ebben az időszakban az 1920-as alapítású Unitárius Irodalmi Társaság adta ki. A folyóirat mintegy százhúsz szerző ezernél is több dolgozatát juttatta el az olvasóhoz. A Keresztény Magvető Füzetei sorozatban a folyóiratban közölt fontosabb tanulmányok különlenyomata jelent meg 1929 és 1944 között 45 füzetben.

The 2nd series: 1922–1944

After the shocks of the WWI, the society and the churches had to find their own voice again, step by step. Throughout this period, the Unitarian Literature Society, founded in 1920, published the Keresztény Magvető. The magazine brought more than a thousand articles from about 120 authors over these years. Between 1929 and 1944, a new series, Keresztény Magvető Füzetei (The Christian Sower Pamphlets) published the main studies of the magazine, in 45 issues.

3. sorozat: 1971–

A Keresztény Magvető megjelenésének huszonhét évi szünetét a II. világháború földindulása, majd a kommunista ideológiai és államhatalmi rendszer parancsuralma magyarázza. Az Unitárius Egyház fennállásának 400. évfordulója (1968) után lehetségessé vált a folyóirat újraindítása. 1971-től a 77. évfolyammal kezdődően a folyóirat ismét megjelenhetett.

The 3rd series: 1971–

The pause for 27 years in publishing the Keresztény Magvető was caused first by the horrors of WWII, then the totalitarian policy of the communist regime. The 400th anniversary of the Unitarian Church (1968) brought back the chance of recommencing the magazine. Starting in 1971 with the 77. year, the Keresztény Magvető has been published regularly.
